SEPTEMBER
RESIDENT EVIL (September 18): Zach Cregger's last film, Weapons, was a huge hit and an actual, really good horror film, so his newest has a lot of anticipation. It's loosely based on the Resident Evil video games, though "loosely" seems to be the key term. From the trailers, this looks nothing like any of the video games except for the fact that there are zombies in it. The odd thing seems to be that they're releasing it in September instead of closer to Halloween for unknown reasons. No one really famous is in this, but it stars the fat guy from Severance, Zach Cherry, and the fat pro-wrestler/actor Paul Walter Hauser.
THE WEIGHT (September 18): This one stars Russell Crowe and Ethan Hawke and is set during the Great Depression. I just read an interesting tidbit about how the term "The Great Depression" was used for the 1880's (there was a recession that had something to do with the railroads) in the United States until the stock market crash in the 1930's, when that period started being known as the Great Depression instead. The plot of this film has gold being smuggled through the wilderness. This played at Sundance way back in January, but it must not be that great because I haven't heard about it until now.
HEART OF THE BEAST (September 25): Brad Pitt co-stars with a dog in this wilderness survival tale set in Alaska. David Ayer, director of that terrible Suicide Squad film, made this. J.K. Simmons also stars in this.
PRIMETIME (September 25): This film is about Chris Hanson and his "To Catch a Predator" show, the one where they used entrapment to arrest people for wanting to have sex with underage kids. Robert Pattinson stars as Hanson. If you remember, the TV show, which started out as a Dateline segment, was wildly popular and wildly satirized on the internet back in the day. I'm guessing this film will focus on the evil aspect of the show, i.e. one person killed themselves after being catfished and his family sued. My big question is: why not just make a documentary about this? Who the heck wants to watch a fictional movie about this when there's real footage out there? Phoebe Bridgers also co-stars, which is kind of out-of-left-field.
UNABOMBER (September 25): This is going straight to Netflix. And this is another film that would probably be more interesting as a documentary. Granted, there is no footage of the few people that got killed and/or had their hands and fingers blown off when opening mail packages, so any documentary would have to re-create those scenes anyway. The Ted Kacynski story is a fascinating one, though, ending after decades when his own brother called the police on him and he was finally caught. Jacob Tremblay stars as Ted. Shailene Woodley and Russell Crowe co-star.
